Update from last night’s post: I spoke to Elsie Lucas, Caleb’s (Jr.) wife. Unfortunately, he died in 1986, and their son, about 3 years ago. It was amazing she was able to remember some information, nothing about our house (as she only remembered their next residence in SE Portland), but was able to give me some information about Jessie Palmer Lucas, who was the wife of the original owner.
She was an artist, who worked mainly with oils, many of Mt. Hood and Crater Lake. She did commissioned work, and donated to one of her paintings to an Episcopal church in downtown Portland.
Unfortunately, Elsie didn’t have any photos of Jessie or Caleb Sr. She said the family photos were given to one of Caleb (Jr.’s) daughters from his first marriage, who lives out of state.
I’m tossing around the idea of calling the Episcopal churches and inquiring if they still have the painting, and if so, if I could see it and maybe photograph it for a house scrapbook. Elsie did warn me (in grandmotherly fashion) not to bother the church, I’m trying to decide what “bothering” them entails. :)
