Casement Bonanza

Am hoping for a very productive weekend! I just finished staining and varnishing our attic (aka new master bedroom) casement windows. This was a project far too long in the making. We had them dipped several months ago, and Jeremy attempted to reglaze one with a broken pane from scratch, which took forever, so we’ve been putting off the others.

We finally sucked it up and started reglazing again. A few broken panes later (there are 6 panes per window), they were finally finished. We decided not to fully reglaze the last two because the glass was too fragile and would shatter if we grazed any of the glazing pins while scraping out the old glazing. I ended up removing all the loose glazing and we reglazed over it. Purists would also say not to use latex glazing. Well we did traditional putty on the first window and this was SOO much easier and the end result looks exactly the same. The putty remains super soft for months making it hard to paint/stain but the latex will skin over much faster but stay pliable.

I prepped the window frames last night by removing rotting foam weatherstrip tack strips and loose paint. I painted the bed with a chocolate brown paint that matches our stain. Jeremy will be installing spring bronze weatherstrip over most of the newly painted area but it will create a nice seamless look with the stained windows and trim. :) He’ll also be aligning the windows and installing the restored original latches. Photos to come!

With those windows installed, we can actually MOVE to our new master bedroom! I started doing a massive laundry effort tonight. Most of the clothes in our closets had a nice layer of dust on the top of the hangers from the remodel filth. I could tell right away which clothes hadn’t been worn for several months. I’ll be decluttering and getting rid of tons of clothes as well. Time to get to work!

Sounds like you have a busy weekend ahead! You can do it… And I imagine you’re going to be really happy to finally get things on the road to finished up there.
