Kitchen: Before and After

The “before” shot shows the bumped out chimney chase behind the stove and a funky cabinet mod to allow for the small refrigerator. Asbestos tile graced the floor:

In the after, we’ve removed the chimney and the bumped-out chase that gave the kitchen some more square footage. We also moved the stove location to the exterior wall for venting to preserve ceiling height. We abated the flooring and had the original fir flooring refinished. The ReBuilding Center provided a perfect-fit swinging door, that had been removed years prior:

The “before” shows the chimney chase and a door to the hall on the right:

In the “after,” we’ve removed this door to accommodate the new location of the refrigerator. The fixtures were purchased from Architects & Heroes:

The most major change in the kitchen is the opening up of the kitchen to the new dormer staircase as well as incorporating an enclosed porch into the living space. Before these features were hidden behind the Snoopy doorway:

In the “after” you can see our new dormer support beam, which we chose to wrap instead of dropping the ceiling. The area on the right shows the opened up area and a peek into the pantry/nook:

Other features are the desk area, which has some pop-up door cabinets up top. Jeremy added a magnetic chalkboard backsplash to this area as well. We have so much storage space now, many of these cupboards are still empty!

The tile was installed last week by Jeff and Troy of JR’s Renovation and Remodeling. I had the corner cabinet stained glass custom made by Middlefield Glass. I made the other glass panels with lead tape from VanDykes Restorers and custom cut wavy glass from Cline Glass. The design in the square panels matches the original windows in the attic.

The art nouveau tile was purchased from New England Art Tile. The crackle-finish tile was purchased salvage from the ReBuiling Center. I had to purchase additional matching tile and bullnose from CFM to have enough, but it turned out great with the linen shade of grout I chose:

The douglas fir cabinetry is accented by hardware from the House of Antique Hardware and glass knobs purchased from eBay.:

If you are interested in the progress from before to after, all the photos are on Flickr.

I shouldn’t forget the other bloggers whose kitchens I used for inspiration! 1916 Portland Bungalow, Bangor Bungalow and Bungalow Insanity, among others.

  1. Tracey, their website is down for construction, but we bought them from New England Art Tile/NEATCO. If you call them at (207) 329-7885 or email sales@newenglandarttiles.com they will send you photos and samples.

    Dawn,

Thanks for the information. I just sent an email to that address, and it came back as failed delivery. Hopefully it will go through later.
