Michelle, honestly we have no idea what you do if you have intact, but old woodwork. I've seen other bloggers have the clear coat stripped off and reapplied or simply used a reconditioning product. I think you can test to see if its shallac, and you may be able to repair or recoat it in that case, but I'm no expert. Also, about fence protection... unless its a short picket fence, I would never paint from the get-go. If you are doing decent cedar, stain it or at the very least use a protective finish. You will have to do something in 2-3 years anyway, and can decide to paint it then. We love the TimberTek products, as they have a product that easily strips off old finish for you to recoat when the time comes.

Hi Dawn.

Your wood trim looks great. We were lucky enough to buy a house where the entire downstairs trim has never been painted. The wood has never really been taken care of either. It looks really dry and the wainscoting is starting to crack in some areas. We were wondering if you could recommend what we should do. Is there a product that you recommend? A varnish or moisturizer?
Thanks so much!

Hi!

We are JEALOUS! Your fence is absolutely gorgeous. We are just now getting ready to put ours in, and are going back and forth between painting it and staining it. We were wondering if you knew how often you will have to restain your fence? I love the look of stain, but we want to go with the longest lasting choice.

Thanks!

Thank you for all the tips!!! LOVED the sander attached to the vacumn tip!!! I wanted to see the finished pixs when all was varnished with the 2 coats of stain, and paper was off the floor, and your house was back together. Are there any photos like this???
We are at the staining part of the process in our 1915 Craftsman in Echo Park,
Calif.
Thanks.

Gorgeous. It makes the yard feel so much more intimate, and I love the photo with the leaves.

The fence is absolutely gorgeous. It's far exceeds what I had long pictured in my head for our yard.

Quick question: Do I understand correctly that the posts are pressure-treated pine and the slats are cedar? If that's true, did the pressure treated posts really take the stain or did you have to cover them with a cedar "shell"?

Bob, the paint came off in large sheets and was pretty thick. Once we sanded pretty heavily, which got off any remaining paint., we used wood filler in the gaps, so I don't really remember that being a problem.

Rebecca, they are at the back of the house and are split. The back door stairs go up to the kitchen and down to the basement. Then there are a second set of winding stairs that go to the attic.
